I am
Not from what
Must would call
A broken home,
At first glance…
But the brokenness
Inside my house
Made it hard to
Call the place
Home.
It was my prison
My secret torment.
It was not my safe
Haven, it was just
Another building
Filled with strangers.
Daddy was a workaholic
Who couldn't hold his
Anger in,
Oh don’t get me
Wrong he never raised a hand,
But who needs fists,
When you’re words
Hit worse?
Mommy was there
But a little to
Self-involved to
Seem to care.
My sisters were
Just trying to make it
In this household,
So I can’t blame them
For their mistakes.
I was just a child,
Forced to live with
Others mistakes.
Forced to be happy
For all the world to
See because god
Forbid we not let
Others see we’re not
One big happy family.
Made to play the part.
Learned so young
What a mask looks like.
And how to hide
The sadness
Behind a lie.
Daddy are you proud now,
Now that I don’t know
How to show emotion?
Mommy are you glad
That you blinded yourself
To my pain?
And maybe
I am the one who’s
The most messed up
Because despite it all
I could never hate you.
And I’ll always forgive you.
