Well I grew up in privledge, but I have been without housing, clean clothes, food, medical treatment, etc as an adult. I just got a mattress two weeks ago. As far as I am concerned if you wont die without something it is a luxury.

We were the personification of the phrase "dirt poor." My dad was a worthless bast.ard that for most of my life even when he was there he wasn't. Mama decided to stay at home with us kids and raise us right which meant that while dad basically worked to keep himself in beer we were welfare cases. One of my luxuries in life was the fact that every year before school my maternal grandmother would take the three of us kids to JC Pennys and we'd get three or four new pairs of jeans(that's how I fell in love with Levi's 501s. Still love 'em today), some shirts(stupid store never had Hypercolor in my size) and a pair of NAME BRAND(!) shoes. Any other time of the year we got used clothes from second hand stores, garage sales, or from friends who's kids outgrew them, and shoes from Wallyworld. It was superposh luxury! Didn't matter that my 501s weren't the "right ones"(Anyone else remember Pepe Jeans? Yeah those kinds of asshats). Got my first kiss because of those clothes. Thank you again Grandma!

The hot pink station wagon parents got at corners action. Hated riding & being seen in it. Was very in cool for a 16yr old going to Kmart in a hot pink station wagon lol!

There's one thing I actually do miss about back then. Welfare cheese made the best grilled cheese sandwich.
