ELI5: Why does your heart rate improve the more you work out? (by Sparky)

ELI5: Why does your heart rate improve the more you work out?

For example, I started working out last week on the treadmill. For the first week, my heart rate was in the 160s the whole workout. A week later, going the same pace/difficulty and length of time, it’s in the 140s instead and I can go longer.
How exactly does the body adapt to do this?
