Why do you think mental health issues seem to be so prevelant today, are we finally being honest about the subject or is it something else that's causing them?

They are more prevalent because we aren't as mentally tough as we used to be.....and from the explosion of "psychology" that has been forced on us is the last several decades. You're crying? Here's a pill. You're sad? Here's another pill, etc....
Its a consequence of societies / people becoming more n more materialistic . As we become more rooted in the material world we forget how to manage our inner environment . The best of the material conditioning or education can only teach you , how to make faster computers or how to go on Mars but it can't teach you how to manage your thoughts or how to be happy . Its not a matter of becoming tough ,, tougher you get more you become a dead person . Indian culture and philosophy has a lot to offer in this field of mind sciences and philosophy etc.
