ELI5: Why do planes always go around the world instead of going past the poles to get to the other s (by Sparky)

ELI5: Why do planes always go around the world instead of going past the poles to get to the other side quicker? For example: Alaska to Europe over the North Pole. Does it mess up internal navigation systems too much?
