If your intentions are honest and good then you should have no problem, but i would say "As a man, I intend to make her happy in life. I want to be there for her through good or bad, rain or shine. I want to be her first choice and only choice" and if that doesn't help, then I wish you the best of luck there buddy.
Well I have not been asked so by a parent of a girlfriend since high school and when I was 28 my 49 year old gfs daughter pop the question and my reply was pretty much the same as SuckItUpPrincess except it was "to make you a new sibling except name her 'Good Lana' if its a girl.(Lana was the daughter of my gf Debra at that time).
