After a construction crew discovered a skull in a Northwest Side Chicago apartment building early Wednesday morning, what could have been a horror story turned into a comedy.

The crew rehabbing the home in the 3500 block of West Wrightwood Avenue were initially alarmed by the discovery, according to CBS Chicago.

The discovery brought police and Cook County medical examiner investigators to the scene. Kathy Utterback, whose family sold the home late last year, happened to be driving by Wednesday and noticed the commotion.

“I saw police tape across the front porch, and I thought, ‘Oh my God!’†Utterback told the Sun-Times. Later, however, the one-time tenant said, “The detective was cracking up on the phone."

The skull, Utterback reportedly told police, was used as a Halloween decoration that her brother misplaced some 30 years ago. Utterback said her brother picked up the skull while working as a janitor downtown two decades back while cleaning out a vacant doctor’s office.

The skull was "much older" than the Jewel shopping bag it was found in and bore "no visible signs of trauma," officials told the Tribune.

Police said no other body parts were found. The medical examiner is set to investigate the authenticity of the skull.
