Our daughter's sleepover was more eventful than we anticipated. (by Sparky)
Our daughter's sleepover was more eventful than we anticipated.
Grace climbed into the passenger seat, spacey and a little out of it.
?Gracie, how was school? Did you have a good day??
?It was fine. Our substitute teacher was a little weird though.?
?Weird? How so?? I responded.
?His name is Mr. Carney, and he brought this creepy looking clown doll. I think it was made out of yarn. He passed it around the class and told us to look at it for good luck before the math quiz.?
?That doesn?t sound too strange,? I said. ?I just hope that clown doesn?t show up under your blankets at night.?
?Mom, stop it!?
Grace and I shared a few innocent laughs during the drive home. During the previous day, she was beyond excited for the upcoming sleepover she was hosting at our house with a handful of her seventh-grade friends. On the day of though, her behavior after school was odd. She looked a little under the weather, and she kept putting her hands against her face as if she were trying to gauge her temperature.
My husband, Tom, promised Grace that he and I would stay upstairs for the evening, and not bother them while they hung out and crashed in the living room. When the clock struck seven, I dropped the pizzas off in the kitchen, and I joined Tom upstairs. Grace had three close girlfriends over, and they were a rowdy bunch. The giggling got a little too loud and irritating, so I threw on some headphones while reading in bed. Tom sat in the office room next to our master bedroom and flipped on a movie on his laptop.
?Mom, look!? Grace shouted, running into the bedroom. ?My nose is red, what is happening to me??
To say her nose looked like it had been hit with a sunburn would not do justice to the patch of color that sat between her cheeks. I had never seen anything like it.
I heard some screaming downstairs, so I grabbed Grace?s hand and we ran down to the living room. Tom followed right after us. The other three girls competed for space in front of the mirror on top of the fireplace mantle. Their noses were painted red as well.
?I don?t understand what is happening. Is it a rash?? Tracy scrubbed her nose with her hand, trying to get the color to fade away.
?Mr. Carney did this!? Taylor turned towards me. ?His nose was red in the morning, but after he passed around that doll, I think his nose got better.?
?That doesn?t make any sense. Maybe there?s a bug going around the school.? Tom walked up to Grace and met her at eye level to get a better look at her.
?Dad, it hurts!? Grace?s long brown hair curled up and transformed into a green and blue monstrous growth that looked like a clown wig.
Same thing happened to the other three girls; their hair took on the shape of a cheap, brightly colored wig you would pick up at a costume store. Except these weren?t wigs, the growth was ingrained into their scalp. Before I could process what was transpiring, Grace and the others jolted upright like they had been struck by something that had power over them.
Rose, the quietest of the bunch, grabbed the mirror and slammed it to the ground. She then picked up a shard of broken glass and thrusted it into Tom?s shoulder. Taylor jumped on Tom?s back. Tracy sunk her teeth into Tom?s other arm. And Grace tore into Tom?s cheek, spitting out a piece of skin.
It was chaos. The girls were possessed by something, and I was helpless. I tried to pull them off Tom, but the five of them were too strong. I reached for my cell phone, but Grace quickly seized it and flung it out of reach. I ran upstairs and barricaded myself in the bedroom.
I heard the girls laughing and singing like they were having the time of their lives. While I tried to figure out a plan, I heard Tom yelling and banging on the door, so I let him in. He was covered in blood, and he plopped down on the bed. I peeked my head out of the room and heard the girls running outside the front door. I chased after them.
They were sitting on the lawn, crying and hugging each other. I glanced at their faces. They looked normal again. But I think that was because on the sidewalk, stood a young boy shaking a doll in front of his face. The boy?s nose lit up like a cherry, as he dropped the doll, and ran down the street in a venomous rage.
They caught the boy quickly, before he could do any harm. However, Mr. Carney has disappeared. Nobody can locate him. And as for the doll, Grace and her friends told the authorities not to look directly at it before disposing of it. Let?s hope they listened.
