ELI5: What's the difference between a war and a 'cold war'? (by Sparky)

ELI5: What's the difference between a war and a 'cold war'?

I was too young to know the Soviet / US cold war so really didn't experience it first hand. What is the difference and why is it referred to as a "cold war"?
