ELI5: For patients that have metastatic cancer, how do oncologists determine what organ the cancer started in?
Example, My grandmother had a cancerous tumor in her bladder last year. It was removed. And now she has new masses in her lungs, femur, and pancreas. Basically everywhere.
So how do medical professionals pinpoint where a person’s cancer actually started from? If the cancer is everywhere in the body, can’t they only guess where it started?
