I (19M) talked to my friend (21F) of 8 years about her feelings for me, but she pushed me away and got upset. Did I ruin my chance to be with her?
My friend Natalie is a very awkward person and not great at interacting with other people. She has zero relationship experience and this was her first time expressing her feelings to anyone. She’s a really great friend though, and I've been close with her for 8 years.
Yesterday she professed her love for me in a very unique way. Natalie made a list to show me how great of a girlfriend she’d be and why she loved me. Some of her points were quite sexual in nature. Natalie told me that she masturbates to me everyday and that it’s the easiest way for her to get off. I said that I felt a bit grossed out by her sexual comments and she started crying. She apologized to me for making me feel uncomfortable/gross and said it wasn't intended.
I thought hard about it and felt bad about the way I handled things. I realized I needed to talk to her again to explain my feelings, so I scheduled a meeting with her. I met Natalie this morning and we got breakfast together. She looked nervous, and was playing with her hair/biting her lip. I asked if she wanted to go somewhere else to discuss this or maybe do it at a later date but she told me it was fine.
The first thing I did was tell her that I didn't mean to use the word "gross". I told her I was very overwhelmed with all the information she gave and it that was just the first word that popped into my mind. Natalie explained her thought process to me. She chose to be very honest/straightforward about her feelings because she thought it would show how much she loved and cared about me.
I told her that I liked her in the same way, and thought we’d make a good couple. I made it clear that wanted a relationship with her. I laid out some of my expectations for the relationship and asked for her input. Natalie got upset. She went on a rant about how stupid and unintelligent she is. Natalie said she wouldn’t even be able to make me happy in a relationship and that she aimed too high by thinking she could be with me. She started crying and I tried to comfort her. People started staring at us. Natalie couldn’t handle this unwanted attention and she broke down even further. She left and apologized for embarrassing me in public.
I called and texted her afterwards, but she hasn’t replied back to me. It’s been a few hours since this happened and I feel so lost right now. All the confidence she displayed when admitting her love to me disappeared after I hurt her feelings. I stayed up all night thinking about her. I feel like an idiot that ruined his chance to be with a girl he really likes. I need advice on what I did wrong and how I could potentially fix it.
tl;dr: I talked to my friend about her feelings for me and said I was interested in a relationship with her. She got upset, went on a rant about how stupid/unintelligent she is and how she aimed too high by thinking she could be with me. I tried contacting her afterwards but she hasn’t replied back. I’m so confused and I feel like I lost my chance to be with her.
