Back surgery (by Critter1211)
My mom may need to have back surgery. Pretty sure she will. She has an MRI on the 30th to see if she does and if so which kind. Has anyone been through this with a loved one? What was the outcome? Recovery time? She is terrified she won't recover. I tell her this is 2017 things aren't like they used to be, back surgery has improved and she needs it not to be in pain anymore. Any advice to give her?

Been through it MANY times....my mom and dad had it, both brothers and sister...and my BIL JUST had one a week ago.
The surgery is pretty routine....the recovery is not....well, depending on the person's age. My mom went through hell but she has a low pain tolerance.
My BIL is having issues with the incision draining.
And alot depends on what is actually done.

@MrWalkSoftly: My mom has a low pain tolerance. How much therapy did your mom need? She need help with everyday living? My mom is 67 and gets around pretty good, but can't lift a gallon of milk due to back pain.
Mine ended up on wayyyyyytoo many nerve and pain pills. Also did 6 months in a physical rehab facility.
Still has pain in her legs because of the surgery. She was 76 when she had it.

@MrWalkSoftly: Thanks for the info. Sorry your mom had so much trouble.
@Critter1211: It's not an easy recovery for older folks. You gonna be a busy lil bee afterwards.
@MrWalkSoftly: That's what i figure. I just hope i'm up for it. I've never had to take care of someone 24/7 before. My mom is my mom ya know, she's a warrior in my eyes. I can never take care of her like she's takin care of me after my surgeries.
@Critter1211: My BIL just had a cyst and bone spurs removed from around and off of his spine. Two hours outta surgery, they had him up and walking. I spoke to him on the phone abt 3 hrs afterward and he was laughing and carrying on like usual.
He went home the next day..... by then, the good hospital drugs had worn off and he's had a rough time since. It'll take him months to get over it, Im sure.
If it's ruptured disc, one never really gets over it...at least that's been my experience with being around those who had that issue.
