Help you're community! (by MrWalkSoftly)
Become a volunteer first responder like here:
""Daytime first responders are needed at the Memphis Fire Department where the chief hopes to ignite the interest of volunteers seeking to serve their community.
Memphis Fire Chief Tim Franz proposes that qualified applicants consider their local fire departments as a venue from which volunteers can serve and derive satisfaction, excitement and a sense of being able to help people in their greatest time of need.
"Becoming a volunteer firefighter is not just about fighting fires," the chief said.
Franz feels many people may not realize that volunteer fire departments are considered first responders and, as such, respond to 911 calls for medical emergencies such as choking, chest pain, heart attacks, strokes, seizures, falls and broken bones.
"A large majority of our calls for assistance are pure medical-based calls and while many of our volunteers are firefighters, many are emergency medical technicians," Franz said and added that some individuals are trained in multiple areas.
"You can cross-over, you can do both or you can train to do just one of them," the chief said.
Franz said many fire departments will pay for the cost of training in exchange for service with the department.
"It has worked out well in Memphis," Franz said and cited as an example the minimum two-year service commitment required by the fire department from those compensated by the city for the cost of an EMT license.
"Everybody wins," Franz said, "and the skills you will learn will be with you your entire life."
Another reward is a deep sense that you are doing something good within the community, Franz added.
While volunteers are needed in most local communities, the Memphis Fire Department has an immediate void to fill.""
