That I pay for "unlimited" data only to be PAINFULLY slowed down once I reach a certain number of gigs, making the phone practically useless
Who's the carrier? Mines throttled right now but I can still get online...just can't stream video.

Thats the problem I had last week with straight talk up until yesterday I only had 2gs it was a pain in the a$$
Sounds like a phone issue. And sometimes, a sim card can make it happen.
You may have apps running in the background too.
I turn off location, don't allow background apps to run...save for one or two that are needed.
Auto updates in app store are turned off.
Some other things I can't think of atm....and I've used a lil over 5gigs in 30 days, not bad.
Btw, if you have an Android phone, Chrome is known for chewing up data if it's left open.
