Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing the word he used because our list of curses is very long (over 300) and they get automatically replaced with asterisks by the Forum software the moment the messages are posted. Have no doubt about it, if I had any way of confirming the word he used, and if it were indeed the N-word, he'd be immediately and permanently banned. I've outright banned racists before and have zero tolerance for them. But in the absence of hard evidence, I have to give all users the benefit of the doubt because he could have just as easily said another curse word that would not be bannable, and I have no way of proving it.

All that said, he's dunced and won't be coming back for a while.

Maybe remove certain words from the censor list....then there is no doubt about what is being said.

That's not a bad idea. Would you guys like me to remove racist words from the censor list? I could always edit them out from posts after taking action.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I need to fix that. However, this actually gave me an idea, and I had a look at kac27's Activity Feed history to see if I could see the actual word he used in his post without the auto-censorship. Unfortunately, we limit the text we show on the Activity to 140 characters like Twitter, and luck is on his side because it cut his post off at "It almost makes me" so I can't see it.

I know this sucks, but if I took action without evidence, then I would open up a dangerous can of worms that would eventually lead me to incorrectly punish innocent users. Moreover, not everyone would agree with my interpretation (since it would be exactly that, an interpretation), so there would be backlash from those who disagreed, and my next action would be even further scrutinized, putting pressure on me to interpret things a certain way. That's a slippery slope I don't want to go down. So I can't hand out the death penalty when the only evidence I have is that a user has committed grand larceny, and I'd rather let 10 murderers off the hook than to mistakenly execute 1 innocent user. The only way I can do that is by only taking actions based on hard evidence that is not open to interpretation.
