"" For nearly 20 years, the secret code to
authorize launching U.S. nuclear missiles, and
starting World War III, was terrifyingly simple
and even noted down on a checklist.
From 1962, when John F Kennedy instituted
PAL encoding on nuclear weapons, until 1977,
the combination to fire the devastating
missiles at the height of the Cold War was
just 00000000.""

Wow! That's kinda unprofessional imo. I've had to unlock codes before (on tv, or hotel cable box etc) and its a known fact the code is always 00000 so I'm surprised our government would use such a code

It was basically a time issue...back then, the military wasnt quite as trustful of the president as they are today.....plus, they wanted to retaliate as quickly as possible....and wasnt the "computer-ese" as there is now.

Do not let your wife know that in future! Lol. I hear it now. "honey. Why is their a password to the toilet?" "because you don't know how to put the seat back down!"

but anyways yeah i can see why the military isn't to trusting to president about things. But seriously? 000000 why not at least 123456 so u knew how many numbers u were typing in.
