David Moye The Huffington Post Oct 21, 2013
It soundsnuts, but a Tennessee police officer hasbeenkicked off the forceafter a run-inwith a squirrel.
Jody Putnamwasfired fromthe MountainCity Police Force after a Sept. 27 incident where he shot his gun at the unnamed squirrel, which had found its way into the Dollar General store.
Animal control wascalled to help get rid of the rascally rodent, but when that officer wasunavailable, Putnam answered the call of duty instead.
Putnamtried to apprehend his squirrelly suspect by shooting hisgun inside the store, according to property owner Carl Duffield.
"Shooting back there, of course that should not havebeen, that should not have happened. Then they began to spray it with maceand pepper spray." Duffield told WJHL-TV. "Therewasa lot of people that come out and just like me they came out and they were coughing and a hacking. It was comical, but I'm sure they didn't feel that way, the customersthat came out."
It isunknown how many shots Putnamfired, and Dollar General store officials have refused to release the surveillance tape.
When bystanderswere allowed back in the store, they saw the dead squirrel pinned under his shoe, the MountainCity Tomahawk reported.
In Mountain City, officersare required to make a written statement to their supervisor whenever they fire a weapon.
Putnam, an officer with nearly two decadesof experience, refused to explain hissquirrel shooting, so he wasfired by the town'sBoard of Mayor and Alderman, according to WBIR.
"The decision the City Council made on thisincident speaksfor itself,” MountainCity Mayor Lawrence Keebletold the Tomahawk.

Lol I was in mountain city just a few weeks ago...have a friend that lives there. I heard of the shooting. Dumb dude got fired cuz he failed to report he used his gun. You would think with decades of experience he'd know that was mandatory
. @scorpionStar that's what I thought it said too at first! Lmao
