Should We (Americans) Learn English As A Second Language In School? (by JustMeAndYou77)

Well i dont believe english should be a second language at all in schools.Yes some americans are born speaking english. But why its taught in school is still primarily because not many know the proper usage.Take for instance spelling, grammar, punctuation. Its taught in school because not many know english, they speak english yes.But do they understand how to use english in all forms,i.e. Reading writing,no they dont.If the parents actually were quite capable and knew what to teach their children, and actually taught them. Then we wouldnt need english in schools. But sadly thats not the case. And with the younger generation using txt, they need english more than ever.

personally i think that a; if yu goto a foreign country yu should learn that language, at least enough for basic communication -that also applies to ppl coming here- and b; that ppl should realize by now that "every known human was born on Earth, and we are the same in most ways." Why not just create a new language that all ppl speak??? It seems like the next logical step, since then -everyone- could communicate with -everyone-, regardless of where they were born or whatever. See my point? Keep the culture, but use common sense, i mean we all live on the same rock, why not have some unity yknow?

@LovelySummeRayne: it almost seems english is that universal language you're refering to. Just an observation... :-\

a very good point indeed. as i said we should have more than one language as a pre requisit and be at least halfway fluent before graduation. english IS the most difficult language in the world and alot is always lost in translation so it should still be a subject. im only semi fluent in spanish but im trying to learn japanese. not easy lol. but to be taught multiple languages opens so many more doors.

not saying that Commonspeak should -replace- the older languages, merely fill in cultural and communication gaps. Very similar to the way Native American tribes used Scalagi (Cherokee common) to be able to speak to other tribes. And ppl think we were primitive -sigh- lol

@LovelySummeRayne: Yea one laungage would be great but what would it be?A lot of people falsely believe english is the most commonly used laungage, but thats not the case.Population wise its whatever they use in india,it being the most highly populated place on earth, then theres secondly china.

And the only reason english is believed to be most highly used laungage in the world.Well to quote rammstein'were all living in amerika'Even where im originally from,we spoke our own native tounge, but of course used cocacola, mickeymouse, tide.Just because people use some english words does not mean its the most commonly used language in the world.A lot of english words dont translate into the native tounge. I.E. Cheerios, tide, cocacola etc.etc.

@CGPhillips: an entirely new one, or perhaps a conglomeration of all languages? And i think Cantonese or Hindi may be the nmbr 1 (or close to it anyway). i think itd be cool to have an all new language to learn, with new characters and such. And i think itd kinda bring ppl together, regardless of nationality.

one language under the sun would be awesome.... however, mankind is too stubborn for that. any fanatacal religioneeres, (just made that word up lol), will never drop the language they consider to be the tongue of god.
