I've drowned a fish or two in my time! While I've been out fishing on the lake. When I've caught a worthless fish but of good bait size, if it hasn't swallowed my hook to un-retrievable lengths, I'll hook it up and throw it out. while reeling it back in it fills up with more water than it can put out. Thus after maybe twice of being thrown out I have a DROWNED BY WATER fish.

@CGPhillips: Yes I am aware of osmosis and how a shark in freshwater pisses a bunch of the freshwater out and it holds onto it's intake of salt. And if you were to put a freshwater fish into saltwater or another form of water it would truly be deffined as poisoning.

@Twoinchheels: Lol I to thought the same thing but noooo the reason the fish dies when you reel it in is cause it is not able to open it's gill flaps to let water pass over them due to the speed in which it is reeled in. Much like when a fish darts in the water it won't open it's mouth and the gill flaps are kept closed for water dynamics. Also when a fish opens it's mouth I think there is a muscle that keeps it's gill flaps closed for protection. And ya I'm sure they have a scientific name for what I'm calling a gill flap but ya get it! Keep fishing!!!

And a fish always has its gills open, even when darting thru water.its an involuntary muscle.yes they due close their mouth but their gills are working just fine,if they closed their gills then theyd stop breathing.just like our breathing is involuntary muscles yet we can choose to breathe thru mouth or nose,a fish only has one choice and its the gills

@CGPhillips: Hey whatever you want to think is fine with me! At this point it's all childish banter if I were to say that in fact a fish can close it's gill flaps just as we to can choose to breath through our nose or mouth we can also choose to STOP breathing much like a fish can but ya know whatever! Lol also if your telling me you can't hold your breath due to our involuntary muscle you my friend need to stay away from water you don't want to DROWN BY INHALING IT!
