Yes, actually. Deoxygenated water or block them in so they can't move. Fish "breath" by pushing oxygen rich water thru their gills, prevent them from doing that, it'll go belly up

@bigmomma19: Ok but that is suffocating a fish to drown is death through submersion in and inhalation of water.

@bigmomma19: Well in this case the more tech the better cause this is an unanswerable question I think! Most would say pull it out the water but that to is a form of suffocation! This question bugs me! Lol

If i remember correctly, fish don't have lungs like we do so, by your definition, no.

@bigmomma19: Ok make note I understand that but is not it's gills used for breathing and I know breath as a noun is
An inhalation or exhalation of air from the lungs.
An exhalation of air by a person or animal that can be seen, smelled, or heard. So if all that being said it only leaves us with more questions!! I guess fish dont breath! And yes to inhale or inhalation is the action of inhaling or breathing in. Thus why breath is defined!

Yes basically a fish is in its element in the water, just like were in our element on land.and if you throw us in the water out of our element then we can drown.so if you take a fish out of its element water which it uses its gills to breath oxygen at a steady rate, and throw it on land then yes it cant breathe hence it drowns.suffocation is when you totally deplete the oxygen, but a fish is still breathing the oxygen for a short and fast pace on land and well just like we cant handle too much water in our lungs, neither can i fish to much oxygen.a fish has lungs they work like ours to help it breathe, just the way we process our oxygen is the only way it differs.sorry i rambled.

@CGPhillips: yes but the question was drown a fish so there must be water! Lol unanswerable! And a fish uses it's gills to pull the O out from the H2O!

Actually you only said on your title can you drown a fish?and well a fishing drowning on oxygen and lack of hydrogen, gets complex so i gave the simplified answer.but a fish drowning in water yes as long as your talking bout fish and not the myth about sharks, well a fish can drown in saltwater if its a freshwater or vice versa.the salmon though has mastered the fresh water to salt water dilemma due to its spawning, but just about any other fish can drown in water if you change where it swims to another extreme its body cant handle.
