Country Boy (by tractorjohn)
Day one of Operation Shoo Goose is over now. Found one goose who was wounded & couldn't fly off, must of been shot on another farm, so I put him out of his misery. All in all there were alot geese trying to feed off our wheat fields, I began shooting at geese as they were trying to land, trying to redirect them away from the fields. I would think they'll be flying by sunrise tomorrow.
Hi John , keepin geese off your wheat fields must be quite a task . is there any other way to keep them off , other then shooting at them , something like a scarecrow perhaps ?
@Singhpk: We tried a scarecrow in a small field 3 yrs ago but it did not have any effect on the geese. There is a butane powered machine that makes gun shot noise but it's expensive to use, so shooting at them works best. I have had where not all of the geese not fly off when I hit the ground in front of them & therefore I have to shoot again. Last year when there were over a thousand geese in one flock only a few would fly off at a time, so I had to reload my rifle twice to scare all of the off the wheat field.
i know you try to avoid shooting birds but what you do with birds you shoot.
@Singhpk: When I do have to put one out of it's misery, I leave for other wildlife (mostly coyotes) to find it.
I'm all set & ready to go on my Wild Goose Chase for the day, just waiting on the sun to rise now. I wonder if the nearby deer hunters hate me for shooting so early in the morning, I mean the deer got to hear me shooting.
So far today I only had to shoot at 3 small flocks of geese & one coyote. The geese aren't flying around today like they were yesterday, wonder why
Not one sign of geese since yesterday morning, none flying overhead & I don't hear any nearby. I guess I scared them off LOL
I just got back from the wheat fields & did not see any geese at all, seen alot of ducks flying away from the hunters & seen a deer getting a drink out of a ditch and seen a coyote running across the main hiway. It's somewhat cold this morning @ 35 degrees, with today's high reaching up to 65 & there's a 20% chance of rain.
