I think most folkes really dont consider the weight of their ammo, UNTILL they try carrying 100 or 200 rounds on their bodies for a few miles, then the lighter 5.5.6 (2.2.3) makes a lot of difference! My HK-91 was in 7.6.2 (3.0.8), nice round, with bullet preformance very similar to the 30-06, but it was a heavy thump to the shoulder every time ya let off a round, and by the end of a long day at the range, IT HURT! Lol, I agree that since switching to a piston type of action, the AR-15 design is as reliable as the Kalashnakov.

@Hawkeye58: I'm still a fan of the reg gas system on Ars. I guess I'm used to cleaning em regularly so its doesn't really bother me to do so. Tho the piston driven systems run like craszy, there are a couple of minor issues that annoy me...Being that a "mechanical" movement, i.e., the piston actuating the bolt, its not QUITE as smooth as a gas ran AR. Its barely perceptible but I can tell a minute difference...also, there is the issue of "bolt tilt", tho it takes several thousands rounds to see it, and its is cured by replacing the buffer tube (cheap lol) I just use a gas ran weapon and keep it clean....Sometimes I think I'm like "Gomer Pyle" in "Full Metal Jacket", talking to my "girl" as I clean her Lmao!

I really wonder why folkes here in the US havent embraced the Bullpup design, like the AUG or the FS2000. Unless its an accuracy thing because of a shortened sight picture. You still get full velocity out of a full lenght barrel and their just easier to carry around.

@lonelyinsc33: I'm assuming you're talking abt one of the newer Savage bolt rifles chambered in .308 Winchester. I, personally have never fired one. The older Savages were more of an economical firearm...the newer ones, tho, are supposed to be really fine rifles...out of the box sub moa accuracy, great barrels, and the Accutrigger is supposed to be fantastic. Let me know how it shoots...I would love to fire one sometime.

I like the 308 cartridge, very versatile, especially if you reload. I've never shot the Savage tho.

My. 308 is very accurate. It's lightweight tho which makes the recoil kick back and upa good bit. Bagged a sweet 16 pointer the first day of the season last year after i bought it.

The .308 Winchester is a very over-looked round. You can get some great "custom" ammo from Hornady and Nosler that pushes a 150 grain projectile out at 3050 feet per second...and with VERY manageable recoil.

WOW! Thats fast! There must have been some significant improvements in powder composition since I used to reload 308's (twenty years ago), back then, with a 150 grain bullet, I could never get more than 2,700 fps with a maximum load.

My. 308 shoots great. I use 180 grain Hornaday ballistic tip. I enjoy using cheaper ammo for target practice.
