Great thread. I don't think about this every day. I never use Love to keep the guy. My life just really slows down almost to a grinding halt and I find a way to maybe start things over. Love kinda pushes me into desparation to either save the relationship or give it some time. When it comes to friends, I tell my friends I love them because there is no other deeper emotion attached to illustrate this on a friendly non intimate level. I think saying it to friends doesn't lose its value as much as saying a lot to a loved one. I think love towards a loved one should be both showed and said...not just said a lot.
